Traveling with a cat on a road trip takes a bit of planning but once you have the right setup, it becomes much easier.
Most of our trips include a few hours in the car and multiple nights at hotels, so we’ve learned how to create a system that works for both the drive and the stay.
The goal is to keep your cat safe, comfortable, and as stress-free as possible
Traveling With a Cat in the Car
The car is your first environment and it sets the tone for the whole trip.
We focus on:
stability
comfort
familiarity
Road Trip Essentials for Cats
Cat travel carrier (soft-sided)
A comfortable carrier is an important item. Soft-sided carriers are easier to position and feel cozy.
👉 We use two carriers: Transpurrter Airline Approved Backpack Cat Carrier (secure and comfortable, great for car rides) and a more budget-friendly Jesper Soft-sided and airline approved carrier
Seat cover, SUV cargo liner for the car
Helps protect your seats from fur, dirt, and little accidents while also creating a more comfortable space for your cat during the ride. It’s especially useful on longer trips or when your cat is moving in and out of the carrier.
👉 Here are a few options: SUV Cargo Liner, Waterproof Hammock Car Seat Cover, Pet Car Bed Mat, Heavy Duty Front Seat Cover
Car seat and stroller travel system
This has been a great setup for longer trips and hotel stays. It keeps your cat secure and comfortable in the car, and makes it easy to transition from the car to a stroller when arriving at the hotel or stopping along the way
👉 A recommended option is a car seat and stroller travel system like this one
Leash and harness
A must-have for safe and flexible travel. We use it for short strolls, moving between the car and hotel, and sometimes even in pet-friendly shops or outdoor areas. It’s also helpful during quick stops, hikes, or when giving your cat a bit of fresh air without worry.
👉 A secure harness and leash like this works really well
Collapsible food and water bowl
Easy to use during breaks and doesn’t take up space.
👉 This is a collapsible food and water bowl set we always take with us
Treats
These are a favorite and can help keep your cat calm and happy
👉 Our favorite treats: Weruva Puddy Pops, Inaba Churu Treats
Traveling With a Cat During Multi-Day Hotel Stays
Hotel stays are where your setup really matters.
Each time we arrive, we recreate a small “home base” for our cat:
litter box in a quiet spot
food and water in a consistent place
carrier nearby as a safe space
blanket from home
This routine helps our cat adjust quickly, even in a new environment.
Hotel Essentials for Cats
Portable cat litter box (foldable)
Easy to set up and pack away between locations.
👉 We always travel with disposable litter boxes or a foldable litter box.
Disposable waste bags and litter liners
They both keep things clean.
👉 These bags are durable and easy to use and these liners serve the purpose well
Pet food storage bag
Keeps food fresh and organized during multi-day trips.
👉 We use this secure roll-top bag
Cat treats pouch
Makes it easy to keep treats accessible for transitions and routines.
👉 A pouch like this works great.
Blanket
A simple but very important item. Bringing a blanket from home helps your cat feel more secure in new environments like the car or hotel room. The familiar scent can make it much easier for them to relax and adjust during travel.
👉 We always bring a soft, familiar blanket like this
Pet monitor (optional)
Helpful if you need to step out.
👉 A budget-friendly pet camera like this can reduce anxiety over leaving your cat alone at the hotel.
Cat-Friendly Hotel Chains
When planning road trips with hotel stays, we look for pet-friendly options that are comfortable and flexible.
Some commonly pet-friendly chains include:
Don't forget to check vacation rentals on AirBnB, VRBO and other platforms, There are many options and the rules are usually set by the property owners.
Many camp and RV sites, farm houses, dude ranches, houseboats welcome cats.
Always check:
if cats are allowed
number of pets
weight and breed restrictions
fees
room and area setup
Tips for Traveling With a Cat (Car + Hotel)
Keep your setup consistent at every stop
Set up the litter box immediately upon arrival
Keep doors and windows secure
Use "Do Not Disturb" Sign
Use familiar items from home
Keep transitions calm and predictable
What Makes Cat Travel Easier
The biggest difference isn’t the distance, it’s the routine.
Once your cat understands:
where to rest
where to eat
where the litter box is
everything becomes easier, for both of you.
